I dedicate this A to Z Challenge to Tina Downey, one of the A to Z
Challenge founders and one of the brightest bloggers who sadly left us
last year. Harder still, she was in a secret support group that I'm part
of. The best way I can honor Tina, who was excited about and never had
the opportunity to read my debut, I've teamed up with Father Dragon to present short bios and character portraits from Woven. I'll write the bios and all art is created by Al Diaz. I hope you enjoy this visual tribute to our friend, Tina.
All his life, Nels has desired to be a knight for his kingdom, a goal that his widowed mother won't allow him to pursue. He has sandy brown hair and green eyes. Villagers call him the "Knight of Cobblestown" for his effort and good deeds. He is undefeated at wrestling and enjoys spending time with his best friends, Wallin and Jilia. What Nels doesn't know is that an adventure awaits if he sneaks off to the festival...

Nels was a fun character. Looks like he's ready to wrestle in Al's drawing!
ReplyDeleteNot being into sport or American I have never heard of Nels,
ReplyDeleteYour post however was good to read.
Yvonne.
Such a great depiction of him!
ReplyDeleteHe is a great character and such a nice young man. What happened to him was very sad but made a great story.
ReplyDeleteGave the story new life, that's for sure. :)
DeleteSure looks ready to rumble
ReplyDeleteHe looks like he'd make a good knight.
ReplyDeleteI loved Nels and his easy character, even when in serious trouble. He has a calmness about him that I appreciate, especially when I meet it in real life in real people. I love this view of him, thinking of that first wrestling match and his win! Lisa, co-host AtoZ 2015, @ http://www.lisabuiecollard.com
ReplyDeleteBased him off someone I know, actually. :)
DeleteHi David .. Nels the Knight .. and does he slip off to the festival - he has some life in him .. and yes I'm sure he will ..
ReplyDeleteFather Dragon's drawing is another classic .. Nels ready for a match up .. cheers Hilary
I love these drawings. What a great tool to go along with the story.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea for a theme. Here's hoping Nels makes it to that festival. ;)
ReplyDeleteNels has a few surprises for the reader. That's for sure.
ReplyDeleteNels sounds heroic to me. As soon as this challenge is over, I'm reading your book. I want to know more.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susan! There's a lot more to know about. :)
DeleteI'm amazed there seems to be a character for every letter of the alphabet!
ReplyDeleteYou know mom's sometimes get in the way. :)
ReplyDeletehe sounds like a young Luke Skywalker. he is a hero in the making and love that he has green eyes:)
ReplyDeleteI used to wrestle in school. Al really captured him well.
ReplyDeleteVery nice! Thanks!
ReplyDeletePrecious Monsters
He comes across as a young man of honor.
ReplyDeleteAll your characters, sketches, and descriptions are wonderful. I could tell right away that Nels was a strong athlete.
ReplyDeleteHuh. For some reason I pictured him with tousled hair. Oh well. Great post! I'm loving all of these character profiles.
ReplyDeleteHis hair decided to behave today. :)
DeleteHe sounds like a warrior at heart ready to take up the challenge. The only question remains which path will he choose.
ReplyDeleteAdventure often seems to wait just outside of your expected path. Neat character!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a cool guy :)
ReplyDeleteAwww, now why doesn't Nel's mummy want him to be a knight? He'll get a sword! ;)
ReplyDeleteMothers hold on to grown children for too long sometimes :) I hope he can make her understand and gets his wish. The sketch is neat, as usual.
ReplyDeleteNilanjana
You sure do have a lot of characters. I'm waiting to see what happens when you hit Q and Y! :)
ReplyDeleteBeing on the other side of the pond Nels is a new name to me, but reading your piece and the comments that have flooded in he seems a popular character!
ReplyDeleteAdventures always seem to start with sneaking off to do something you're not supposed to :)
ReplyDeleteA surprise adventure! Those are the best!
ReplyDeleteLoved learning about Nels. Yay for adventures!
ReplyDeleteUntethered Realms
A handsome adventurer. Nice picture, he really comes to life. He'd be fun to have as an adventure companion. I can see him getting into mischief after mischief! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteSounds like the beginning of a story...
ReplyDeleteLiz A. from Laws of Gravity
Nicely done~ I didn't know Tina, but I know she is missed~ I have heard amazing qualities about her~ So, sad She would love this
ReplyDeleteNels looks like he is ready to take on the world. He kind of has a Luke Skywalker vibe. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThese sketches are amazing.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a rugby player. I think he would be a great knight.
ReplyDeleteToo bad his mom doesn't share his aspirations to be a knight.

I am SO close to finishing Woven, but my Nook died and I can't find the charger anyone. It vexes me as I am so close to the end and wish to know what happens.
ReplyDeleteI do know I LOVE Nels. I loved him right off, but the more time I spend with him the more I enjoy his company.
Thank you're enjoying it, Jack! Gosh, so close. Let's hope that charger shows itself soon. :)
DeleteSo you're saying he likes to wrestle? May I wrestle him? He looks kinda cute... Haha!
ReplyDeleteI guess that would be all right, but you're going to lose. ;)
DeleteMy son wrestled in high school, and I wish he wore Nels' uniform instead of a teeny weeny singlet! This sounds like a wonderful adventure story, and it was a great idea to team up with the very talented Father Dragon!

Very interesting premise for a book (I clicked over to Woven). Now I'm going to have to go back and get a sneak peek at characters A through M! Elle @ Erratic Project Junkie
ReplyDeleteNels seems like a lovely character! I wonder what adventure will await him.
ReplyDeleteCobblestown is a great name for a town by the way!!
Nel seems ready for an adventure or a wrestling match! :)
ReplyDeleteHe looks game for anything in the illustration. Does his mother worry about him? :)

This is great! I'm loving the whole site set up and especially all the great artwork. I see in your sidebar you have a zombie book on sub. Good luck with it - as far as I'm concerned, the world needs more horror stories! :)
ReplyDeleteHey, I know Nels was a great wrestler... but it looks like he could also handle his own on second base, or even shortstop... nice moves, man :)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE NELS!!!
