Seasons In Time and Space: An Update Before Docking The Cosmic Laire For An Undetermined Duration

Hey, guys! It's been too long since I last posted, and there's no good reason for this lapse of time other than exploring several options that the universe has placed before me--among others issues. I'll get to that in a second. But first I just want to let you know what's been happening on my end of the universe these last couple of months.

First, a special shout-out to new readers and followers from Brazil who have given Woven a wonderful reception there. In fact my social media has exploded with new followers as well. Thank you for finding me and for enjoying our enduring little ghost story. Muito obrigado!

Since my unemployment scare a few months back, I am now working two jobs over 6 out of 7 days a week. And what I am doing is making a significant impact for my colleagues, in a capacity that I have never experienced until now. It's fun and I love it. To be of even greater value to the team, I will be returning to school this Fall to obtain a certificate in substance abuse counseling. Didn't see that coming!

Now comes the hard part--I'm about to be brutally honest with you here. Some incredible things have happened these last three years. With it, I have also taken more hits that has all but derailed me from pursuing this writing dream. I haven't exactly recovered from them. After 20 years of doing everything in my power to improve my craft and become a published author, I have succeeded both traditionally and self. But now life has caught up with me and I have to adult now. Not forever. After many discussions with myself and authors, I have determined that other matters need my attention. A new foundation needs to be laid before I can resume writing. This will take time, which means I will be bowing out of the writing forefront for a season.

I will continue to work quietly on my stories when I can. A sequel to Woven has taken great strides in recent months as well. I just won't have much of a presence on this blog or on social media. I fully intend to finish Jeremy's story along with the 20+ tales that endlessly swirls around in my brain day and night. They just won't come as quickly or as readily as readers may like. Please excuse me while I secure home base, so I may later be the prolific writer I've always wanted to be.

This is far from a formal goodbye. I will still poke into the Blogosphere and social media when I can. I will still participate in book and author events whenever possible. I just had to get this off my chest, to not let you guys stay in the dark any longer. Until then, stay awesome!

Wish me luck! Have you had to put a hold on your writing for a time? How did you get back into it? How's your summer so far?

I'm David, and I've left the the keys in the ignition.

  1. Being adult sucks, but sometimes you have to behave responsible. You've just taken the pressure off yourself to produce in the writing area. You'll probably have more fun with it now!

  2. I'm sorry to hear that but I know you've been through a ton in the last year or so. I'm glad you'll be keeping your hand in and like Alex says, you might be even more productive without the networking pressure. Look forward to updates every now and then!

  3. That's wonderful your book is doing so well in Brazil.

My publishing company is my focus right now. I'm still working on my next book, but it has to come second.

  4. Of course social media has to take a back seat to all the important things. And it sounds like you're doing good work! We'll still miss you, though :)

  5. Sorry to hear about you having to cut back on your writing, but being an adult (usually) takes priority. Good luck and hope you can get back to your writing sooner than you expect.

  7. Yes, we all have to be adults sometime. And that's okay too. Sounds like you have some great opportunities to explore and your family is important too. I have a job where I'm paid to write and it takes all my writing energy. I'm choosing to maintain my blog instead of writing creatively because it helps so many people. Hope you have time to stay in touch.

  8. Ditto to what Alex said. I know you will get back to writing one day, just not as soon as you originally thought. Good luck with the adulting.

  9. Ah well. For everything there is a season. This is not the writing season for you. Luck with all your endeavors, and may it be easy to get back into the writing when the time comes.

  10. Life happens, and family comes first. I hope everything goes well for you. One thing I've found is that trying to push myself to write when life is full of 'opportunities' only results in more stress and a lack of not only writing but reading, too. I had to step back and give myself some room. So, it's better to take it slow then kill your love of writing. Trust me.

  14. Life is a harsh mistress who won't take NO for an answer. Each experience you undergo in these next months will further enrich your sense of the world so that your next tales will be the better for it. Best of luck, Roland

  18. I am so glad to know that you have found jobs that you like and I am sure that has eased some of the stress you had a few months back when you were worried about finding a job. It sounds like you have some adulting to do- and I hope it goes well. You sound like you are on a path that will be good for you and I am sure the time away from social media will allow you to work on the things you need to focus on. Good luck and see you when you are around. :)

  19. Hey David, I know this was a tough decision for you to make, but you're doing the right thing, and I wish you the best. The writing will always be there, but family and jobs have to come first. Good luck with everything. I'll see you around! ;)

  21. Hi, David,

Family is very important. You have little ones counting on you. Remember you have accomplished so much in your short life... I mean you haven't even hit middle age yet... There is time for your writing...

I starte writing in my very late 40's and I am still unpublished, but that is fine. I drift in and out of this world too because I have to support myself. But some day, maybe, I will have the success you had with WOVEN... Be proud... BE HAPPY... It's wonderful that your new journey is taking you to a place that you enjoy. You will be helping others and that is very noble and WONDERFUL... Enjoy this new journey with no guilt for leaving... it is only temporary. And, as I have found out, this community will be here to welcome you back with open arms...

    Stay well Sir Knight....

  22. DPK.. I think I stumbled across your blog back in 2011 or so after being wowed by your submissions to some small writing prompt competitions I'd found.. you've given tons of time, and tons of yourself. It's good to take some time to become centered and refocus. I all but stopped writing completely while I was on the East Coast.. and now I'm back, recharged.. with my passion renewed. You'll be back, of that I'm certain. Plus.. now that I'm back in Utah (Spanish Fork), I'm sure I'll see you around.

  23. Aw. Best of luck to you and really hoping to see you back writing here. But take your sweet time! We'll be here waiting for your awesome comeback. :)

  24. Wishing you all the luck in the world. You are an incredible writer and I understand the call to adult. I had to put my writing to only a thought for ten years while I took care of children and fully vested myself in being a stay-at-home mom. When it was time to start again and pursue, I just knew, and it worked. I applaud you for doing what you know needs to be done with faith in your talents that when it's right to return it will happen and we'll all be here ready to welcome you back:)
