Post: The Fortune of Being Super Subborn

Who likes fortune cookies? You know--those lightly sweetened folded crispy things made of flour, sugar, and vanilla, often containing a little piece of paper with something inspirational written on it? Well. I do. A lot! Even if the fortunes are vague, or not fortunes at all ("You are a flower ready to blossom," etc).

There's a Chinese restaurant near our place that's something of an extended family favorite. In celebration of my sis-in-laws' recent matrimony, we went. And my son handed me a cookie. And I opened it. And I read it.

And I could not believe what I read.

"Your hidden talent will soon be revealed."

My initial response: "Curious ..."

Shortly after, I received a message in my inbox:

"Please paste the first fifty pages in the body of the email, in reply to this email. Thank you."

An agent replied to my query. And she asked for more! (I'd throw confetti right now, if I had any). This is a first in my writing career. Good reason to get excited, yah?

What surprises me most is the request is in response to my first wave of queries. Before WriteOnCon. Before a dozen or so of you amazing bloggers tore my query apart for all its worth to help me make it better.

This reminds me of subjectivity, a little ...

I eagerly anticipate the response, whatever it be. Like my Viking ancestry, I have stubbornness issues. I'll see this writing through. It can be done. It will be done!

Rob Snyder--the ultimate motivational speaker.

I'll explain who and with whom if something more comes of this experience. Nothing is official yet. No since revving the hype machine, right?

Update: As I wait, I write. I decided to tackle the Magic and Zombies stories simultaneously. About a thousand words in on both. Looking good so far. This week, I'll clock in more and keep up with reading all the entries for Rachael Harrie's Second Campaign Challenge. It amazes me how many good ones there are this time around. Acute writer's envy going on around here. Awesome!

And a great big giant THANK YOU for checking out and commenting on my depressingly hopeful entry. You guys are the best. Now it's my turn to read yours!

I'm David, and check your pantry for mice!

  2. David that is AWESOME! Congrats on the request. I have complete faith in your MS, and it doesn't matter if I've read it or not. I know I'm buying it when it's published and notice I say "WHEN."

  4. Sure but those are all preprinted and it's not like the waiter/waitress looks inside before he/she gives the cookie to you. Plus a fortune like that is so vague it could mean the request in your inbox or it could mean something else entirely.

  7. I never realized Rob Synder has that line in so many movies. WHY would you bring up MICE and pantries? I just finished restocking my baking supplies in rubber containers and I'm paranoid about a little "guest" getting into them.

Fingers crossed that request turns into more requests for a full & to sign ;)

  10. If you're gonna enter the cafe scene my fellow, make sure you bring some brass-knuckles.
    And probably some earphones too.
    It is a harrowing jungle.

  29. Congratulations! That is so exciting! Best of luck *sending lots of good vibes your way*. I once got a fortune that had the word 'Lollipop' in it. I still have it. I found that eerie since the name of my blog is 'Lollipop's Cottage'. Congratulations, again!

  34. Congratulations! There's nothing quite like that feeling, that rush when an agent wants to see more of your writing. Great news.

  35. I love when the fortune cookies do things like that!

  36. Viking ancestry, interesting. Stubbornness, I relate. Wishing you the best on that agent response!

  38. I love when fortune cookies predict the future! I had one just before I started dating my hubs that said there was a life changing person about to enter my life.

That was way more interesting than the one that said, "You have tasted the bitterness and the sweetness...of coffee."

    Wha?

  39. Pretty great news. I think I'll go to the Chinese carryout tomorrow to see what my fortune cookie delivers.

  41. Wahoo David! I'm way excited for you! Here - I'm wishing on a star for you that the agent will take your book. Huh? Yeah, I know it's the middle of the day, but just because I can't see the stars doesn't mean they're not there! Voila! I did it! (Your space background inspired me, what can I say? Besides, I love space myself!)

Hey, it's funny - right before I looked at this post, my son told me a girl asked him out to the girl's choice dance using homemade fortune cookies. He laughed when I showed him your photo half a minute after he told me. How's that for serendipitous?

And what a great You Can Do It montage - I'm taking that to heart!
