November Reviews: Interstellar, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Big Hero 6, and Remember Me!

November is just about over with impressive box office numbers to go along with it. The biggest players turned out to be science fiction, which is awesome! And with The Hobbit's conclusion and Into The Woods coming soon, fantasy looks primed to dominate December.

So what's the buzz? This is what I've been watching this month:

Interstellar

The earth is dying. The only way for humans to survive is to race against time, and space, to find a new home in another galaxy. Say what you want about Christopher Nolan's sci-fi odyssey, but I loved it. When movies make me think, it wins. Films like this inspire the mind and fuel the imagination. And cool things were depicted that film has never shown before, too. I'm excited to see what space travel has in store for us. You won't want to miss this on the big screen.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

The penultimate chapter of The Hunger Games finds our Katniss wedged in a political struggle as war is eminent. Fighting President Snow is only the beginning. I can't see why the third book had to be split, but if that reason was to give greater depth into the process of how a revolution begins, Part 1 did an amazing job. This is a super smart political drama. If you have been following this series, then you won't be disappointed.

Big Hero 6

Stricken by the loss of his older brother, young Hiro enlists his brother's creation, Baymax (a personal medical companion) and his friend to find the super villain responsible. And kick some butt. It has been too long since we last had a good animated superhero movie, and this adaptation of a Marvel series footed the bill, fun and surprisingly heartwarming. This is one Disney movie that I would love to see a sequel for.

Remember Me

In 2084, Neo-Paris is the battle ground for a war on memories, where a consensual dictatorship controls us. Only Nilin, a memory hunter, has the power to stop it. She just has to find her stolen memory first. This game came out a while ago, but it was Shallee's book that made me hurry and play it. A world where memories are weapons is a scary scenario, which makes for an intense game. Some deep themes, well worth playing.

And that's a wrap for now! The long weekend is coming. I'm hanging my writer's cap and will be enjoying some family time and a berry pie. Yes. I love berry pie.

Seen any of these movies yet? What did you think? Playing to visit your local theater over the weekend? What's your favorite pie?

I'm David, and when the turkey is done, the Battle will come!

  1. Interstellar was ambitious and definitely a movie that made you think. My wife and I talked about it for hours afterwards.
Looking forward to the final Hobbit movie.
And unfortunately I'll be seeing the stupid penguin film this weekend...
    Have a great Thanksgiving!

  4. Happy Thanksgiving! I'm hoping to see Mockingjay sometime this weekend. I hate going to movies when they're first released so I usually wait for some of the craziness to die down.

  6. I liked Interstellar although I cried more than once during the film. It had some really sad moments.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Saw Big Hero 6 last week and I'll be seeing Interstellar on Friday. I'm sure I'll cry through the whole thing, based on the trailer.

  8. HOBBIT is the only one I will watch :) I just have to see my King Thranduil feeding dust to some nasty Orcs with his Elven armies!

  9. Interstellar does look cool.

I think Mockingjay was split into two movies because all movie franchises are doing that these days. It started with the last Harry Potter book being split into two movies, which was done brilliantly in my opinion. Then Breaking Dawn did it. And now Mockingjay. It's a trend that'll probably continue for other book trilogies/series that go to the big screen.

  11. I would be happy to see any of these movies! I don't get to the Big Screen often. :(

  12. It's been a little bit since I've been to the movies. There ares a couple on your list I wouldn't mind seeing, though. Hunger Games and Big Hero 6 look good.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  13. I had to choose between Interstellar and Mockingjay this weekend. Both were playing at the same time, so when the family went I could choose between sticking with my husband or going with my 14 year old daughter and her giggly friend. I stuck with the hubs and LOVED Interstellar. I probably won't see Mockingjay now until it appears on Netflix.

  14. I haven't seen any of these movies yet. I'm particularly excited about Mockingjay and Big Hero 6. I wonder if BH6 is appropriate for a kindergartener though, if I were to take my daughter.

I also want to see Gone Girl. So many movies I want to see, so little time.

  16. I might still have chance to see Big Hero... maybe. I'm of course all set up for the last part of the Hobbit! Dwarves would never forgive me if we don't go to see it. Happy Thanksgiving, David!

  17. There's so many great sci-fi and fantasy movies out and soon to be released. I am really looking forward to Mockingjay Part I and The Hobbit. I wasn't sure about Interstellar but after reading your review, I will be adding this to my movie list.

By the way, I love your background here!!

  18. I saw it Saturday. My friend was mad that it left us hanging, and I guess that's pretty annoying. I'm not sure I'll go back for Part 2. I read the book, but I"ll be darned if I can remember what happens next. I can always go to Wikipedia for a refresher, though!

  19. I saw Big Hero 6 and Mockingjay Part I. The first I loved (and cheered, and cried!), the second was a flatlining disappointment. I heard great things about Interstellar and it's next on my must-see list. :)

Hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!

  20. Oh Mockingjay was brilliant! Considering it would have been my least favourite of the books, it is nonetheless my favourite of the movies so far! I hope they do as good of a job of the Part 2 :) I'm also keen to watch Interstellar. Remember Me sounds pretty interesting too, I love the idea of it, I'm just not a gamer :p Thanks for these little reviews, very interesting!

  21. Hope your berry pie was good. We consumed two peach blueberry pies here. Not to mention one apple and one pumpkin sweet potato pie.

  22. I'm late to the party, and we just saw Big Hero 6 Saturday. It was really a lot of fun. Still need to see Interstellar

  23. I saw Mockingjay last week, and my sister said Big Hero 6 was really good but really sad. I'd still like to see Interstellar one of these days, and I can't wait for the final Hobbit movie.

  24. Really excited for The Hobbit. One last time!

  25. Big Hero 6 hasn't come to Jamaica yet. My mom wants to go with me for Mockingjay so I'm waiting for her. But she said the same thing for Catching Fire and didn't. I'm giving her til next Monday. Last year I gave her til almost Christmas but this year I have a bunch of December movies to see. Interstellar unfortunately went almost as fast as it came. It has returned today but at 8:30, not sure if I can plan on that. I don't club for a reason (plus I hate the idea of clubbing).

Hobbit 3 is on my must see list. Saw Penguins of Madagascar yesterday and it was a barrel of fun. Last month I saw Nightcrawler and Dumb and Dumber To. Would only recommend the latter if you are interested in seeing it. Fun but might not be for everyone. Nightcrawler was a deep mind blender of creepy insane dream pursuit. Jake did a great job in his role and I highly recommend this movie.

  26. Interstellar - would be scary if we had to find another place other than earth to live. Very creative..

  27. Can't wait to see the Hobbit. I've read the Hunger Games trilogy and can see why they split it into two parts. I love the two plot twists!!
