Thursday Scores: Flow Like Water

Before I start, I wanted to thank everyone for your kind comments yesterday. They put a quick stopper on my worry wart. And now, I'd like to play around and try something. It's a new feature, darling.

Some of you know I'm a HUGE fan of film scores. I have 30+ GB of tracks in my iTunes list that I listen to whenever I work and write. And I thought, maybe I can share some of these tracks with you, with a little something about them, so you can listen while browsing blogs or if you need a quick, musical fix to get you moved and motivated, as they do for me. First up, I present this score:

Flow Like Water by James Newton Howard
From the Film: The Last Airbender

I'm also a HUGE fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, so when this film was about to come out, I was WAY excited. Unfortunately, the movie didn't do the show justice. At all. Thankfully, Mr. Howard managed to pull off an incredible score for the film, which I think is the film's one redeeming quality. He organized the orchestra into four sections, each indicating one of the four elements (wind instruments for Air, strings for Water, etc). Each time I hear this, it reminds me of the epic fantasy that's waiting to be written on my shelf. Have a listen and be inspired, and have a great Thursday!

I'm David, and today, I'm going to Flow Like Water.

  1. Something good came of the film then!
Not much into movie scores, although the soundtrack for one movie did become an inspiration for my third book.

  2. James Newton Howard is a boss! I haven't seen this movie or listened to this soundtrack yet, but being a fellow film score addict, you can bet I'll be listening! Thanks for the recommendation.

  4. I might be the only one in the world who liked that movie. I look at it as a separate entity than the series. We shaved my boys' heads like Ang before we went to see it. :)

My daughter likes to compose music and wants to do film scores when she grows up...so I am all too familiar with film scores playing constantly at my house. She can identify almost every piece of music from a movie, and if it's something she's never heard before, she knows exactly who composed it just based on the style of music. And of course James Newton Howard is one of her favs ( he does all the M. Night movies).

What a fun new feature for the blog.

  5. I should listen to more scores just to expand my horizons a little. Most of the music on my IPod is peppy stuff to jog to. And I like it dead silent when I write. Thanks for the suggestion.

  6. You are singing my song. Love movie scores and I use them frequently while writing. I'll check out the Avatar/Airbender score.

One of my most inspired acquisitions came from a game though, Assassin's Creed.

  7. I am die hard fan of Avatar too and I agree with you that the movie fell short. I was expecting wine and they gave me something between tea of socks and cheap tequila. But the music is alright. Have you heard the music from Two Steps from Hell and Immediate Music? Not movies, but very movie-like and inspiring. If you don't, you've got to hear "To Glory" from Two Steps from Hell (find in YouTube). I bet you'll love it.

Also- congrats on the HUGE epic amount of followers! You ROCK!

  10. I've never been a big movie score gal either. I like words. But then, now that I say that, there is the "Rocky" soundtrack...that gets the heart pumping!

  12. I have a feeling I'm going to love this feature. I'm a huge fan of film scores, but I never know where to find good new ones to listen to. And this music is epic! I'm going to have to listen to it when I start drafting again.

  13. Excellent film score. Have you heard the main theme from the sci fi movie, Sunshine? It's the music I'd love to have for a book trailer lulz. It's so good.

  17. I love film scores! What a great idea. One of my favorites, believe it or not, is from the movie "Megamind". It really makes the film that much better.

  18. A great score can really make a movie. Last of the Mohicans and Inception come to mind.
