This is it. The end of the world - go ahead and get scared now.
I wrote the following post in advance, but saw this blogfest and couldn't resist, since it pretty much goes along with the theme I ran with this month. Thanks to Chuck and The Warrior Muse, we get to end the world on our terms. I choose to end on a sentimental note that will end with a most embarrassing picture of yours truly ...
* * *
According to a great many sources, both ancient and modern, today is supposed to be the last day that you or I will experience life on this little planet that we fondly call Earth. It's not exactly clear how or in what way this is going to come about, but, we still have some 16 hours to find out, give or take a few, depending on which time zone you reside in. It's kind of a bummer, really. I enjoy life, but maybe all this breathing and eating business if overrated. Who's to say we're not some anomaly, a mistake in the cosmic soup, and maybe, in the grand scheme of the universe, it's better this way?
Well, I'm the type of person who likes to search out the optimism amidst the pessimism. I'm also the type of person who likes to keep all of his bases covered - insurance, if you will - who is to say today is the end or tomorrow, or 600 million years from now? So, now that you're here, and if you've been following along with my month long series and all of its little clues (which is general good preparedness tips to begin with), you now have everything you need to stand a fighting chance, and I will now get to the meat of this message:
This little ball in space is our home. We humans are like one large family. Sure, we tend to squabble and disagree at times, or worse at other times, but there is also much good. And in a world where I may not be the easiest person to figure out (I'm still working on it myself), I've found another home of wonderful people, eager to learn every day, who are an inspiration to me and my writing. You. All of you, my friends of the Blogosphere. If this really is the end, I wanted you, my crew of 800+ and all my wonderful readers to know how thankful and appreciative I am to each of you, for pushing me, stretching me, and for finding value in the words I write, which has given me more strength in times of doubt or during temptations of seceding than you can imagine.
Again, my friends, this is adieu. I have my towel, my comfy robe on, and a little something extra, just in case, even though I've been told it won't help at all. You're all amazing, thank you for believing in me and this blog, and may we dodge a bullet and see better days ahead.
In short - so long, and thanks for all the hits!
I promised an embarrassing picture, didn't I?
I'm David, and I think someone had sandwiches in this bag ...
P.S. If all's well after today (I'm 99.8% sure it will be), I'll announce the Build Me A Blog-Hop winners on the 24th. So many good entries, too. It's going to be tough to select just three. I'll also provide query critiques on the 26th to anyone who wants one, so get them ready!
Does that photo mean you are the Unknown Blogger now?
ReplyDeleteMore of a tribute to Douglas Adams if anything. :)
DeleteI like the Unknown Blogger :)
DeleteIs this Unknown Blogger something I haven't heard about before? If so, please tell me the dets! :)
DeleteHmm, you still there, and so am I...Did those Mayans give a time? After cocktails? Before?
ReplyDeleteWe're still here . . .
ReplyDeleteThere's still time yet...
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Any tribute to the magnificent Douglas Adams is always welcome in my little world!
ReplyDeleteThat would make an interesting avatar photo. Happy holidays to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to still be around. I won't leave this earth until there is a host of heavenly beings with me! Have a great holiday, David!
ReplyDeleteOkay this phrase: "a mistake in the cosmic soup" had me rolling. Very funny.
ReplyDeleteWith all this talk of doom, I kinda feel like Carrie Ann in Poltergeist, "We're still here."
Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays, David! Loved the post and the pic!! =)
ReplyDeleteBut what does the bag mean?
ReplyDeleteI don't remember a bag.
Where's the floating couch?
You know, "should we put paper bags over our heads or something?"
Delete"If you like."
"Will it help?"
"No." :)
Oh! That's right. I'd forgotten. It's been a while since I read them.
DeleteYou are very much appreciated in this blogging community. Hope your holidays are wonderful and you eventually take off the bag. Lol
ReplyDelete2013 will be great!
David
ReplyDeleteway to keep the spirit light and airy as we go down...
The world doesnt actually end the plot just changes tomorrow
cheers and Happy Holidays
Don't panic! Awesome towel by the way -- so useful, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to read such a feel-good apocalypse post. Thanks, David.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Xmas and New Year's, and I suggest removing the bag before drinking egg nog.

That photo is how I feel, we are both wearing the same outfit... so if I share my photo... it would look like yours...
ReplyDeleteDid we make it?
My link is dead, I ask again did we make it?
[Visit my post for that to make sense]
Great end of the world post!!

Oh No, Let's Go... Crazy
Your post gave me warm fuzzies about the end of the world. Also, that song is stuck in my head AGAIN. A friend tweeted it yesterday and it played on repeat for a good while. x_x
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays, loving the Hitchhikers reference!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be funny if the world ended tomorrow instead?
ReplyDeleteI would die laughing ... literally. ;)
DeleteWhat a post to go out on! Very heartfelt. Too funny about the sandwiches; I hope they smelled good.
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating!
Shannon at The Warrior Muse
Cheers to a great year and thanks for all the laughs! ISo thankful I didn't miss this post. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou look remarkably dignified for wearing a paper bag on your head!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I've been here! Congrats on all the blogging success, and happy holidays!
ReplyDeleteI postponed to pay my credit cards after the 21. I guess now it's time to pay the bills. So much for a good financial plan.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas! I have my insurance in someone who was born over 2000 years ago.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Christmas! Now I'm hungry for sandwiches... (:
ReplyDeleteI had an early lunch - just in case - but was wondering where me bag went :)
ReplyDeleteToo funny... I think you should do a caption contest for the next Unknown Blogger picture :)
I'm glad the world didn't end, because I still haven't gotten back my copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide from my friend's ex-girlfriend. Unfinished business. It's like I've been given another chance at life. First order of business: get that book back!
ReplyDeleteShoulda had my paper bag. It seems the world ended quietly because I never noticed it. Here I am on the 22nd and I'm still here. No zombies, no nothing. Most disappointing. Next time they predict the end of the world I'm going to go DPK style, paper bag, towel and all.
ReplyDeleteHe he great post, enjoyed all the Douglas Adams references :)
ReplyDeleteLove the photos for your blog post. Images from space always fascinate me. Thanks for sharing!

I love our blue little marble. I sure hope nothing happens. Then again, I haven't even started my Christmas shopping.
ReplyDeleteGlad the humble abode of mankind is still here. I finished my Christmas shopping to celebrate.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, you've got your towel. You'll be fine. Enjoy the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters, and remember to avoid Vogon poetry.
ReplyDeleteI'll most likely be dead by morning, but who knows? This apocalypse might be mostly harmless.
I think we're safe. At least as of this writing most of the world has passed through 12/21 without incident. Time to continue onward to the next apocalypse.

Tossing It Out

ReplyDeleteHi David .. well they let us be - but unleashed this little island with enough rain to turn us into islets!!
ReplyDeleteLove the Unknown blogger bit - but you're so right about the great support and friendship out in bloggerspace ..
Have a very happy Christmas with that secret extra - just make sure you hold back to be around for any critiqueing that needs to be done on the 26th ... Happy times with much festivity and joy - Hilary
