Random: After Careful Consideration ...

After an awesome conversation with a good friend of mine, I've come to an earth-shattering decision. Okay, okay. Maybe it's not that big a deal, but it makes sense.

No more blogging/posting about submissions.

Why?

For one thing, it builds unnecessary hype. I want this blog to be a place of positivity and endless enthusiasm for writing, not a hub for pity parties if I report "fallen through" leads. Secondly, what kind of position does that leave an agent or editor if they happen to visit my blog after the fact? Real awkward, I'd say. For us both.

Whatever I've said recently about submissions, please disregard. I'm turning a new leaf over. The only exception to the rule is if I land a contract. Savvy?

Now, I'm curious about what you all think of Remakes! I for one think, if you can make it better, go for it. If it's already great, leave it be. Even as big a Spider-Man fan as I am, I felt the original films missed something, something that this new beginning is chock-full of. And do I spy Sally Fields in there? That alone is epic win!

In a word: Amazing!

Also, a childhood favorite PC game of mine will be getting the "reboot" treatment. I groaned at first, but then I saw this trailer. And was "virtually" blow away.

Inappropriate? Why?

Is it true? They've made the iconic Lara Croft look proportionally realistic? And with that bow, it gives the game a Hunger Games feel to it. Don't you think? And all those wrecked ships from different time periods washed up on the same shore? Yes, please! I'm gonna play it.

After all, don't our stories look better after a redraft?

Tomorrow I'm posting my first entry for The Rule of 3 Blogfest. Come and share in the adventure of three young occupants from the outpost of Renaissance!

I'm David, and you folks on twitter rock!

  1. Wow. I love the Tomb Raider trailer. I mean--I was going to play it regardless, but now I'm super excited.

And I'm generally down with remakes--I usually line up to see them. I do enjoy the ones that try to put different twists on the original--not huge sweeping changes, just an alternative focus.

  2. That new Spiderman looks awesome! Although I have to admit, it seems early for a remake.

  3. How many remakes of Spiderman can they make? I'm guessing at least 20 :)

I like your rethinking about submissions bloging. It is very professional.

  4. Remakes like Footloose? Pointless!
My challenge piece might be the only one I write, but that one came easy. Between hosting the Insecure Writer's Support Group, Pay it Forward and other blogfests, and numerous guests posts, I am stretched thin. But all of that supports my blogger buddies, which is more important!

  5. I'm so behind this Lara Croft reboot! Finally a protag gal gammers can get behind and not resent the anatomically impossible proportions. Not to mention the entire trailer was gorgeous!

  6. I agree with you... if they can make it better that's great, if not - leave it alone! The spiderman trailer looks awesome, but honestly... isn't it a little early for another remake? Ugh. I think in a way I am getting sick of remakes. It seems like nobody can think of anything new so they just remake something else. It's getting old.

  7. I didn't see Franco...though I admit it looks like this Peter Parker has more of the outcast flavor that they were really gunning for in the first movies.

And that trailer for Tomb Raider was SICK! That was so wicked it could have been a trailer for the movie remake, only with an Appleseed Ex-Machina style. Hey, that's not a bad idea! Hmmm...

  8. I can't wait to read your #REN3 post David!!!

  9. Good choice! And now, yes, you got me excited for Spiderman. Although I admit, I already have a weakness for the web slinging photographer :)

  10. I've always complained that Tobey Maguire doesn't really fit the Spiderman role. I know, I know, many will disagree but I'm ready for a different Peter Parker :-)

  11. I applaud your decision to stopping discussing submissions. I think it is one of the WORST things a writer can do. Never wallow in your rejections and never ever advertise them. Agents and editors will check you out before they offer to sign with you. One agent told me she read every single one of my blog posts before she requested the full.

Now my agent has me out on submission with editors, but I won't write one post about it until after I sell.

I'm on the fence about the new Spider-man. I'm not sure if the actor is right for the part. The trailer did look wicked good, but I think the music helped. I've seen good trailers for movies that sucked. So, I'll have to wait to see it.

  12. It's amazing what they have done with video games these days. I'd see the new Spiderman, although I enjoyed the originals, too.

I don't blame you for not blogging about submissions. I'm not sure I would either.

  13. Wow, those are great trailers. I think rewrites can be good if it has a twist or something to keep me there (although I did really like the first Spiderman...I'll have to think about that one).

  14. I could get behind a Lara Croft reboot. Spiderman honestly seems unnecessary especially given that the other ones by Tobey Maguire were good (the first two especially) and that they are so recent. But whatever. The Hollywood money-making machine must be fed.

That is an interesting take on submissions that you've opted for. I honestly would never have looked at the blogging thing from that angle.

  15. No worries:) Blog about what you like, I'll read it:) And Spiderman...well, let's just say it better be better than the last ones they made;)

  16. I love reboots-- most of the time. It's fun to see what someone else does with the same basic idea!

  17. Hi there! Came by to read your #REN3 post, but am interested in what you've said here as well. I think it is a wise choice to cease posting about submission status, rejections, and any activity that goes on during the query process. Yes! Save it for the contract announcement and the fabulous "how I got my agent" or "How I sold my book" posts. :)

    Good luck to you.

  18. you're right....Sally Fields and I'm sold. It actually looks good, and before I clicked play I was already skeptical. I hadn't heard about this.

I think you're stance on blogging about submissions is a wise one. If I ever get to that point...I mean WHEN, I get to that point I may follow your lead!

  19. I didn't know they were doing a Spiderman remake, but the trailer looks good.

  20. I love when they remake a movie-- when they can do it substantially better. Not just a little bit better. And Tomb Raider looks awesome! That doesn't mean I'll play it, but kudos to them! (It was a trailer for a GAME, right? It was hard to tell if it was that, or a movie!)

I think you made a good choice about the submission news. As much as I loved reading about it, I know that agents really like to feel like they are your number one choice (even if they know it probably isn't true). If they find out they are number 47, it kind of ruins the illusion. :)

  21. This Spiderman looks like it might be darker than the last, which might be interesting.

Yes please to the new Tobraider :-)

  22. I'm terrible at opinions on movie remakes, but good on opinions about submissions blogging. And I applaud the choice.

Here's hoping we get the, "Yay I'm represented!" post soon, but in the meantime, there's so much more to talk about.

  23. Remakes are good...I mean if they add to the original in a way that the newer generation relates to and without tweaking up the storyline too much. That said, some are sacrosanct; because of the director's vision, the actors, photography or the screenplay and should never, never be tampered with...I really liked Tobey in the series as he represented the ole spidey from comics and animation...I do have a bias like that, I cannot see any one else other than Christopher Reeve as Superman even though Brandon did a good job and the technical effects were reflective of the age we live in. Sorry long comment.

  24. All right, your followers will be anxiously awaiting that post that you landed a contract =)

And I for one totally dig remakes. It gives me a chance to fall in love with my favorite stories over and over again.

  25. Wait, didn't Lara Croft JUST happen, even by Hollywood standards? Oh man, now that film is stuck in my head. *rushes over to see if its on*
