Post: The Most Astounding Fact

You guys know who Neil DeGrasse Tyson is, right? He's one of the coolest astrophysicists alive today (arguably, the most awesome of all time). Come to find out, he was once asked, "What is the most astounding fact you can share with us about the Universe?" His answer may just blow your mind. Click the video and enjoy.

What do you think? Do you agree with Dr. Tyson? What else is cooking out there in the universe?

I'm David, and which star are you from?

  1. That is the BEST answer. I've always believed we are connected. He says it much better than I could.

  2. Very incredible. I'm a big fan of Tyson. Many think he's an athiest, as he has an interesting take on the creation of the universe. When you look deeper into what he's written and what he says, he's not an athiest. Not really agnostic either.

  5. Like Michael, I knew of this answer from BABYLON 5. We are made of stardust and the sea. How magical is that?

  6. Cool answer! I had a science-minded friend once who, in a very sweet and stumbling way, tried to use this as a pick-up line. After some coaching from us gal friends, he finally got it to the "You have the beauty of the stars" phase. :)

  7. Isn't it so amazing! I love cosmology. The inspiration for my next novel is the fact that the stars will not always be shining. We are alive in a time where the universe is bright and beautiful. Some day, although it will be millions (billions?) of years from now, the stars will go out, and it will all be dark again. How fortunate we are to witness the beauty of the universe!

  8. In college, I wrote an essay about the universe and stellar dust. I said that our bodies were made of the remnants of the stars.

On the cover page, in harsh red letters, my professor wrote, ‘We are NOT stars’. I received a D+ for that term paper.

    The year was 1972.

  11. I would have to say that I'm not surprised. At a molecular level, if we're honest with ourselves, we're all made up of the same various trace elements. It is the combination, the shaking, the stirring, the swirling, the various mixtures that abound exponentially that bring us to be creatures, things and objects of difference. Very cool. Thanks for sharing, David :-)
