Post: Dreams, Office Moves, & Members!

I like sleep. Just lying there, resting my head, closing my eyes, allowing the mind to wander. This month has to be some kind of record for disturbing/motivating dreams. This time concerning rejected queries.

It came in the mail, a yellow envelope, and I thought, I already got back what I mailed months ago, and I never sent an SASE. So I open it. I didn't recognize the name, but the agency rang a bell. Now, there's this thing about not being unable to read in dreams. For some reason, I can, and the letter went something like this:

Dear Mr. King,

       NO!

*however* You have an interesting premise. I would like to see what you can do with a little polish. I printed out the first chapter and offered notes for improvement. Do this for your whole MS and send it to me to me to ...

     Sincerely,

     Dream Agent

I woke up nervous, excited, and laughing.

An agent, sending me notes? Who does that?

Even though it was a dream, I'm glad my inner agent thinks it's worth the time, so back to work I go.

Speaking of agents, I'm happy to announce my good blogging buds Cassie Mae and Donna Hosie were agent-swept last week. Congratulations to you both! Head over and congratulate them, if you haven't yet.

I'm moving! Not house moving. I did that last year and am not looking forward to that any time soon. I don't often talk about work (HIPPA would be on my case if I did), but due to changes and stuff, I've been asked to move into an office. With a window. By myself.

How totally unexpected! I've never had personal office space before. Not sure if this is a reward for good behavior, but I'll take it! By doing so, I have to relocate all my personal and work relateds. Might take a while.

Update: Enough of this dragging-my-feet business. I said Woven revisions would be done in August and I mean it. On a cool note, my sister, who is ultra picky when it comes to books (in a good way) finished the first half and said, "Send me the rest. Stat!"

What a great motivator. I'm on it, sis!

There's a lot to be had on the blog this week, so check back often. There will be tropes, reviews, randomness and advice that you won't want to miss.

I'm David, and these boxes are heavy!

  1. thanks for the shout out! And congrats on the R&R! Those things are so so valuable. I wouldn't have the book I have now without them. :)

  2. Good luck with the office move. I have an office window, but the view isn't the best. I did, however, see a raccoon this morning. Lol

  3. When my boss put me in my own office, I went scratching and kicking (not literally). I have co-dependency issues and the though of being alone made work suck. I didn't even make it a year before I quit. (for unrelated reasons, but now that I think about it, perhaps it contributed more than I let myself believe...)

  4. Keep having dreams like that and it will happen!
And sorry, office moves are the worst.

  5. I've had sooo many agenting dreams. I know just how you feel! The worst part is waking up overjoyed only to be punched by reality, BUT at least we are practicing for when that day really comes :) Good luck with the move!! Shuffling things around is a pain but it'll be worth it.

  6. Moving sucks. I moved last May and it looks like I'll have to do it once again next May. Ugh. We have so much stuff. Not looking forward to it.

Looks like your dreams are trying to keep you going. Keep listening to your subconscious!

  8. Strange dreams can be good motivation. Now, if only we could get agents to dream about our books, right? ;)

  9. Your own office with a window that is pretty swanky :) I think I had a dream like that once but the letter blew up in my face. What does that mean?

  10. Congrats on the office with a window!

I hope the agent dream bodes well for the future.

  11. Good luck with the move!

It's interesting how influential dreams can be. Sounds like yours was quite the motivator!

  14. I have never yet dreamed about R&R letters, although last year I had a first when I dreamed about updating Twitter while skiing. (I often dream about skiing. That was my first Twitter dream though.)

Thanks for the shout out and good luck on your revisions. I am trying to finish a second draft before I have to go back to teaching at the end of August.

    Race ya?

  15. Well, they say dreams can come true, so you never know! Wishing you the best as you journey through the process. Congrats on the new office, too.

  16. An office with a window sounds great! Worth the move, for sure! However, I do hate moving. Blech. Love the dream! Were you able to read the notes before you woke up? Your subconscious really wanted you working on it.

  17. Good luck with the move. I've done several office moves. I loved when I got a window.

  18. Man, I WISH I dreamed. I think I'd get so many strange forms of inspiration then :)

    Good luck with the move!

  19. I have some pretty wild dreams, too, but never about writing. I'm also revising and hoping to finish draft #2 before the end of August. One part done, two parts to go...Good luck!

  20. I'd say moving to an office by yourself is a good thing. Positive thinking, right?

Love the dream. It'll happen to you one day, I know it will. And I'll be ready with the streamers and confetti when it happens

  21. Your own office sounds like a promotion to me. Congrats.

  22. I had plenty of agent dreams when I was querying too. What can I say? You just get querying on the brain.

  23. Wow! Congratulations on your request. That's just great news. And so cool about your 700 followers.

  24. Very interesting dream...so detailed. It's also interesting that you haven't been able to read anything in your dreams before. I don't recall if I have either. Thanks for sharing and good luck with the queries. :)

  25. Dreams usually end up as deja vu sometimes sooner or later, so you never know. ;) Good luck with revisions!

  26. I love the logic of the dreamworld. It always seems so real.

  27. I can't read either! I'm so glad I'm not alone, I thought I was weird! I have tons of memories of different dreams where I had a book but couldn't get it to open.

Have fun revising! You heading to WorldCon in Chicago, by chance?

    1. You know, I never thought of that, having relatives so close, it's worth looking into. I'll get back to you on that.
