IWSG: Back To Basics and Balance and Books, Oh My!

It's the first Wednesday of the month, which means it's time to get insecure! Special thanks to Alex J. Cavanaugh for creating/hosting the Insecure Writer's Support Group, a monthly forum for writers to share insecurities without fear of reprisal.

Hello, friends! It's been a while.

If you've been following along you'll know that this year has been one adventure after another for myself and those close to me. There's still no signs of this of letting up in the foreseeable future, but I've come to grips with it. Things had become so wound up and convoluted, I had to press the proverbial reset button on some things, leading to a few sacrifices. The hardest of them? Disbanding from critique group, all but disappearing from social media, and of course, not updating this blog often enough. I'll throw writing regularly into the mix.

The cause of this? More or less being distracted by a host of good news and curve balls. Finding out that I'm a best seller in another country, throwing my back out (getting better), getting accepted into the college program I've been working on all year, washer and A/C breaking down--heck, I even won a pool table. How random is that?!

But the biggest of all is ... well, I'm sworn to secrecy on that. Maybe in another month I'll spill the astrobeans, but it's all good news and not writing related. Then again, it could be writing related. Later on. You never know about these things. Let the speculation begin!

Well, friends. That's all from me for now. Hopefully I can get as much writing in as I can before school starts in a few weeks. And I'll be sure to keep this place updated, if only once a month or so. The last thing I want to do it sever ties with this community that I love, who has done so much for me. Thank you. Wish me luck on this venture!

Anyone else going back to school this year? When life gives you roller coasters, how do you not spill the lemonade?

I'm David, and I'll be at Salt Lake Comic Con next month!

  4. You won a pool table? I've no idea where we'd put one if we won a pool table.

Update now and then and don't vanish.

  5. It sounds like life has been full of surprises lately! Winning a pool table is random, but it's a good kind of random. I can't wait to hear more about the big secret!

  6. Sounds very intriguing. I guess what has helped me deal with the rollercoaster of life is knowing that anything and everything that happens can influence my writing.

  7. Keep us updated on what's happening with you. Nothing like life getting in the way of writing and being with your writer friends. Too bad about the critique group, but you can always get together with another one in the future when the time is right. Good luck with the new venture.

  8. Of course you're going to spill lemonade on a roller coaster. The trick is to spill as little as possible, spill on the areas that will do the least damage, then accept it. Eventually the ride will stop. Can't wait for your astrobeans.

My hubby would love to win a pool table.

  17. You keep that lemonade in a thermos with a strap then let that roller coaster take you on an adventure. Can't believe as a writer that didn't immediately come to mind David. We are problem solvers! And creators but let's stick to solvers since it sounds better. Glad to see you still popping in and remembering us. Congrats on all your success. Notice you have an untitled MG in progress. Working on my second MG and hoping to use it as my first work to try and snag an agent one day. The dream. Plus I'm self publishing later this year and freelance write full-time. The dream I refuse to let be a nightmare even when the walls are closing in. Behave walls! I'm writing.

  18. I will happily wish you luck!!

A pool table?! How awesome. My kids would love that.

At the expos last month, a very busy, yet productive writer told me she only updates her blog the first of every month. She said with the day job, that's what she can manage and you have to have balance to maintain energy and sanity.

  19. Hi David - definitely sounds like lots has been and still is happening around you - being away is fine ... but just updating us is essential! I can't wait to see what's going on ... good luck with it all - certainly randomness reigns ... but the College course - excellent news - cheers Hilary

Life is interesting for sure. You're doing great, getting through all your obstacles... You have youth on your side and determination and talent.

So the back goes out, you deal with it. It only get worse as we age. LOL... Sorry Pal. I wish it didn't. But we learn with age and realize we can only do what we can do.... go with the flow....

Take care, and keep us posted. You know we are all standing behind you, cheering you on!
