The WOVEN A to Z Challenge: Z is for Zack!

I dedicate this A to Z Challenge to Tina Downey, one of the A to Z Challenge founders and one of the brightest bloggers who sadly left us last year. Harder still, she was in a secret support group that I'm part of. The best way I can honor Tina, who was excited about and never had the opportunity to read my debut, I've teamed up with Father Dragon to present short bios and character portraits from Woven. I'll write the bios and all art is created by Al Diaz. I hope you enjoy this visual tribute to our friend, Tina.

Tassin is presenting us with this final piece. And while we don't have a character with a name that starts with Z, we do have an editor...

*     *     *

Z is for Zack

Zack Clark is an Associate Editor at Scholastic, where he works primarily on fun, fast, MG and YA adventures. Along with Woven, he’s edited the multiplatform series, Spirit Animals, wrote the online companion game, and edited the 2011 re-launch of the first eight books in the Animorphs series. He lives in Brooklyn, New York with his adorable bat-eared dog Zoey, and enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons about as much as Zoey enjoys eating his dice.

That's a wrap! We survived the Challenge! I think a round of applause is in order for Al Diaz and everyone who stuck with the challenge this month. Extra points to those who came back often. Thank you for visiting. Al, Michael and myself hope you enjoyed this challenge.

The Cosmic Laire will return on May 6th. See you then!

*     *     *

Y is for Yalva

The father of King Lennart, remembered by many as a benevolent monarch, Yalva met an untimely death years ago. His son's reluctance to uphold the throne has caused Yalva to remain as a ghost in the kingdom, a ghost that no one has seen for decades. If only his son (or Princess Tyra, his granddaughter) would take his mantle and rule Avërand with honor, Yalva's ghost will finally be able to move on.

This next entry is a bit of a cheat. This is the letter X, after all. And who better to complement us with a cheat than Tassin the dwarf?

*     *     *

X is for The aX

A useful tool for cutting down trees and chopping up wood, Axes have served the people of Avërand well for hundreds of years. Sometimes they get dull or rusty, much like Nels's before he sneaked his way to the festival. But in the wrong hands, an ax could be used for a more nefarious purpose. No one could've expected that the fate of Nels will be forever changed by bringing a new ax home from the festival...

This is it, the final stretch of the A to Z Challenge. Let's do this!

*     *     *

W is for Wallin

A sturdy and dependable lad, Wallin is one of Nels's friends and his most frequent sparing companion. With tousled red hair and green eyes, Wallin is one of cobblestown's most competitively minded youth, who also shares the dream of being selected as a knight's squire. Quick to tease and unwilling to give up, you can't go far without him cracking a joke or out eating others in a meatball eating contest.

Today's illustration is by one of Al's many dwarfs -- Tassin, son of Zenon and father of Sessin, Father Dragon's Task Master and leader of the Dwarf Cheering Squad. Thanks for helping FD out, Tassin.

If you happen to live in or near Las Vegas, I will be signing copies of Woven with my co-author Michael Jensen, today at the Rainbow Boulevard Barnes and Noble at 2:00 pm. Do come and say hi! :)

*     *     *

V is for the Vagas

Once a part of the kingdom of Westmine, the Vagas have become a nomadic people, having made their home in the deep woods of the valley. They are a branch from the land of Ilyden, the birthplace of divining magic. Because of Hilvar's ghost and Westmine's stewardship in the hands of Avërand's king, the Vagas will never regain their kingdom--unless a royal from Avërand comes to change all that...

*     *     *

U is for Ulrich

The father that Nels never knew, Ulrich was a favored knight of Avërand and a truly influential and good friend to King Lennart when he was a prince. A mystery to many since his origins are unknown, Ulrich worked hard as a stable boy until he earned his place in the knighthood. Not every person enjoyed his charm and success, which some say led to his tragic, premature end.

I'll write the bios and all art is created by Al Diaz. I hope you enjoy this visual tribute to our friend, Tina.

Update: Al's done an amazing job, guys. Due to gallbladder surgery (you realize how big a dragon's gallbladder is?), Al has called on his dwarfs to help with some of the remaining days of the challenge.

I believe Tassin is responsible for this one? Not bad for a dwarf!

*     *     *

T is for Thimble

Thimbles serve as a protective element, one that traditionally prevents fingers from getting pricked by a needle. But as a tool in a fabricator's sewing kit, they are used to protect against physical harm and some forms of magic, so long as they stay in the holder's possession. Keeping a thimble in your pocket, or on a chain around your neck, will keep you safe. Rely on it too much and its magic will wear thin.

S is for Sibylla

A young conjurer before her death, Sibylla is the sister of Gleesel who actively haunts their mansion home. She is unable to move on, and it is unclear as to why. She does not make her presence known often; her manifestations are a grisly reminder of the way she was murdered years ago. If only she can tell Gleesel that their mother's lullaby is the key to their freedom...

There are few who remember the apprentice of Bosh, but those who do know Rasmus as the Master Threader for his ability to weave (and maintain) himself into the appearance of others. He has dark hair and eyes, and he has returned to sever the threads of those he believes will unravel the Great Tapestry. Rasmus will stop at nothing to secure everyone's pattern, even if that means taking their faces as his own.

E is for Eye of Needle

The Needle of Gailner is a long lost tool of fabrication, able to alter reality for whoever uses it. This power may even sew someone's unwoven thread back to their body--which is why Nels and Tyra seek for it. Within the eye is a unique gem, but little else is known. This ancient illustration is the only indication that we have of what it may have looked like.

C is for Canis

One of the older knights of Avërand (favored until Arek assumed the honor), Canis is a dependable and loyal man, always prepared to fulfill any order from the royal family - no matter how trivial it may be. He has light brown hair and eyes, and he knows how to handle a sword. He is one of the few who are suspicious of Arek's true intentions for courting Princess Tyra.

Tomorrow: D is for Dyre.

I'm David, and "ready your feet, lads!"
