This month, I'd like to introduce a special guy who did something great a few weeks ago. As you know, he's been an awesome member of the writing community for some time - but, it wasn't until he organized an anthology to help fund his stepson's college tuition that he showed his true colors. As a fellow participate, I thank everyone who submitted to this anthology and made it so successful. For organizing such an act of selflessness, this deserves a knighthood.
Let's make this all official! Henceforth, I do hereby dub thee, Nick Wilford - Knight of the Cosmic Table!
NW: Thank you David! This is an honour I never expected. If I could, I would pass on a knighthood to everyone who contributed to the anthology, or is shouting about it in some way!
DPK: So would I, Nick. If only I had a bigger table ... I'd better look into that.
So, the plan is to have this anthology available by March 4th of this year. Could you tell us the story behind this anthology? Of all the possible kinds of fundraisers out there, what inspired you to do this for Andrew, your stepson?
NW: As soon as it became apparent about six months ago that we would have to send Andrew to England for the kind of course that would be suitable for him, incurring hefty fees, we started looking into all kinds of fundraising opportunities. We have had lots of events in our local community: a race night, sponsored cycle run, Family Fun Day and Fayre, and there's a Ladies' Night coming up this weekend. My wife has also started up a business selling wax warmers (scented candles with no mess or flame), which has been very successful.
I knew straight away that I wanted to do something that would involve the writing blogosphere. There is an incredible ocean of talent there to tap into and that really shines through in the final collection. Doing a blogfest to get entries for an anthology seemed like a pretty natural idea, and then it was just a matter of coming up with the right theme. Overcoming Adversity came from the ant that features on Andrew's campaign mascot - they work together to surmount obstacles and get things done. Andrew has overcome a lot of adversity in his life and that is very much ongoing now, but I think the anthology shows that there are always others who are going through problems and no one should feel like they're on their own.
DPK: That's an incredible story, Nick - and just like ants, it sounds like you guys are lifting ten times your weight to see this project through. That merits a double-tap on the shoulder with the ol'dubbing sword, I think.
Tell us about your writing journey. What do you write? What inspired you to start. How long have you been blogging?
NW: Where do I start? I've been writing for as long as I can remember, but the first things I have a clear memory of are little plays when I was nine or ten. They generally featured people from real life - family, friends, and they would send them up very gently! I see writing as a way of processing and making sense of the world around you, and it's been the same since then, although I only started taking it seriously a few years ago. As for what I write, I'm still experimenting. My first two novels were thrillers, but I'm not sure that's the genre where I most "fit". I wrote a YA dystopian for NaNo 2012, and really enjoyed it, and I've tried other new genres for bloghops recently - romance, and a paranormal for my own anthology. I'm having a lot of fun!
I started blogging in October 2011 and it has really opened up how I think about writing - trying different things, techniques, and sharing advice and support. I really value all the friends I've made, and it's hard to remember a time before!
DPK: Sometimes you have to genre-hop before you find the right fit. Truth be told. Best of luck to your endeavors! You are certainly a welcomed presence in the Blogosphere. We're all glad that you are part of it!
What does it mean to be a knight to you? How does it apply to your writing and in everyday life?
NW: Well, I've always tried to be pretty chivalrous, but I guess I'll be very conscious of my status now! Don't want to do anything that would bring the good name of the Cosmic Table into disrepute.
DPK: There may be the occasional party where we'll drop the chivalry bit and act like our old ruffian selves. Details pending.
Speaking of parties, what's your favorite eats and treats, so we'll know what to stock up on?
NW: I'll take whatever's offered - not very fussy! But I am partial to spicy food. Fajitas are good. Sounds like there are some good perks to this knighthood thing!
DPK: Shh! Icksnay on the erkspay ... ;)
Final question: If you were to pick up and start reading any book right now, what would it be? Why?
NW: This sounds cheesy, and is not meant to be a marketing-type answer, but I'd like to read my anthology (finished copy) to see how it all hangs together as a whole. I'm currently immersed in formatting, which is a learning curve for me, and I'd like to get all that done and have the finished product in my hand! I've read all the pieces several times for proofreading and other requirements, but I'd like to read the whole thing cover to cover without an editor's hat on. One thing's for sure, it's going to be extremely inspiring!
DPK: You're not the only one, Nick, and I know I'm looking forward to it!
You've passed the test! Here's a special badge, just for you, that you can do with as you wish. Thank you for taking part in this interview and for joining us at the Cosmic Table. Lady Bennett is glad to have someone to share it with.
You know, besides me.
NW: I'm blushing! Thank you again for bestowing this rare honour, and I will wear my badge with pride.
