Do These Cellos Have Phrik or Neuranium Strings?

Ever watched a Star Wars movie or played one of the games set in a galaxy far, far away and wondered, hey, how come my lightsaber won't go through that guy's metal weapon? Or that particular wall? Aren't light sabers supposed to be able to go through anything?

Nah! What fun would that be?

All elements to a story have their limitations. Without them, there would be no surprises, or any doubt, that our hero will survive their next Sith encounter. Thanks to Star Wars enthusiasts everywhere, we now know of a few lightsaber-resistant materials, sometimes used as armor and weapons. And, in rare cases, musical instruments. I sure would like to know what these guys are using for their cello strings.

May the 4th be with you!

  2. If I ever had my doubts that you were a full blown nerd... :)

I think I've watched that Ender's Game teaser a dozen times already this morning. Imagine how I'll be when the actual trailer is released.

  3. What a coincidence, just last night I posted an essay on Sanderson's Second Law (limitations are greater than powers).

  5. As standard issue, there are silver cello strings. However, I do think glass would be anti-lightsaber. But I'm pretty sure glass cello strings wouldn't quite be the same. I mean, you can get nice resonance off of glass RIMS (like wine glasses) but those aren't bowed instruments...hmmmmm

(I do love the pieces those guys do. Have you seen their Pachelbel's Canon?)

  7. One of the things that the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon series had in it was a battle between Asajj Ventress and Anakin. It started raining, and the rain drops sizzled on their lightsabers.

Then in the updated Clone Wars cartoon series, season four did this whole underwater thing and there were lightsaber battles underwater. Only I don't understand why the water didn't just start boiling around the lightsabers or something to that effect. I mean if raindrops sizzle, it's gotta be problematic fighting underwater, right?

    Lulz.

  11. I'm excited for Ender. Everyone and things needs a Kryptonite, or there would be no story.
