I Read This: CassaFire

The Vindicarn War is a distant memory and Byron’s days of piloting Cosbolt fighters are over. He has kept the promise he made to his fallen mentor and friend - to probe space on an exploration vessel. Shuttle work is dull, but it’s a free and solitary existence. The senior officer is content with his life aboard the Rennather.

The detection of alien ruins sends the exploration ship to the distant planet of Tgren. If their scientists can decipher the language, they can unlock the secrets of this device. Is it a key to the Tgren's civilization or a weapon of unimaginable power? Tensions mount as their new allies are suspicious of the Cassan's technology and strange mental abilities ...

I know what you're thinking (I think): about time you reviewed some Science Fiction! Trust me. There's more to come. But first, let me tell you about this book!

The thing about this and the previous book, CassaStar, is that Byron's a relatable character for me. And in some ways, not too different from the lead of my first three books (also a starfighter pilot). Aside from that, the words flow - clearer than the first, which shows me how much Alex has grown as a writer with his second book.

This novel has everything I like about science fiction: deep space, strange worlds, dogfights, the issues that make us human, and a touch of romance? Yep. It's in there, and it has a way of messing with your mind (hint hint). It also had me cracking up with the first line.

In short, I'm glad that I found this series (which has satisfied my starving starfighter fix) and I look forward to where Byron's journey takes us next. Looking for a copy? Look no further. I've provided a link for it here.

I'm David, and Byron ... so much for privacy! ;)

  9. I've got CassaStar and CassaFire so I need to make sure and move them up my TBR list. I really liked your mention of the maturation your noticed from book one to book two. As writers, that's what we want, to have the reader enjoy each book more and more as we get better and better.
